Latest Group News From The Wessex Region.

Group members have been finding some superb ray fishing lately with a higher than normal catch rate despite a number of fish not making the specimen size. Firstly Group secretary Paul Thomas set the bench mark by landing himself a very respectable Small Eyed during round 4 of the WSG shore league of 9lb 3oz. Paul's catch also took the Sea Angling News fish of the month award.

Shaun Bowditch also got in on the action by landing himself a Small Eyed of 6lb 12oz during an evening sortie to the Milford area. Shaun managed to brave the weed and always obliging dogfish to land his fish which was taken on a sandeel bait fished at range.

This year the annual arrival of the black Bream from the west Sussex beaches seemed to get off to a slow start with just a few fish showing. Picking the right tide and conditions seemed to pay dividends and Jay Bowditch managed to find a fair number of fish in the 2lb+ bracket. Most fish weighed and returned were around the 21/2lb region but there was a distinct lack of bigger fish. Hopefully numbers of larger specimens should arrive soon as conditions improve.
WSG member and fixture secretary Mark Plowman hit the jackpot during the latest shore competition held on the Browndown ranges in Hampshire. Battling through sometimes enormous amounts of weed Mark landed a 9lb 8oz Thornback Ray to add to his match bag. Unsurprisingly Mark went on to take the evenings heaviest fish prize and win overall despite a number of hounds being taken.

Yet another S/E Ray for Shaun Bowditch from Milford
Ben Phillips with his 8lb 8oz catch.

Ben Phillips also took advantage of the recent run of rays with another trip to the Milford area during unsettled conditions and was rewarded for his efforts with a fish of 8lb 8oz. Ben's fish was also taken on sandeel fished at range.
